September is officially Happy Cat Month—an entire month dedicated to ensuring that our feline friends feel loved, comfortable, and, of course, happy! This special celebration was created by the CATalyst Council to raise awareness about the importance of feline health and wellness. As proud cat parents, it’s our responsibility to make sure our kitties are living their best lives.
So, how can you tell if your cat is truly happy? Here are five clear signs that your furry friend is content and thriving:
1. Purring Contentedly
A cat’s purr is often a sure sign of happiness and relaxation. While cats may purr for other reasons, such as to comfort themselves, a steady, rhythmic purr while they’re sitting on your lap or cozying up next to you usually means they’re in a great mood.
2. Playful Behavior
Does your cat love to chase, pounce, or bat at toys? Playfulness is a clear indicator of a happy and healthy cat. Whether they’re darting around the room or enjoying their favorite feather toy, active behavior shows they’re mentally and physically stimulated.
3. Kneading (Making Biscuits)
If your cat kneads soft surfaces (or you!) with their paws, this is a sign they feel safe and comfortable. Kneading is a behavior that stems from kittenhood when they used it to stimulate milk flow from their mother. Now, it’s a comforting behavior that shows they trust you.
4. Eating Well
A happy cat has a healthy appetite. If your kitty eagerly greets you at feeding time and enjoys their meals, that’s a good sign they’re feeling content and well-nourished.
5. Curled-Up Sleep
Cats sleep a lot, and when they’re curled up in their favorite spot—whether it’s a cozy nook in the house or their luxurious cat bed—it’s a sure sign of happiness. Cats that feel safe and happy will sleep in relaxed, comfortable positions.
So, whether your cat is purring up a storm, showing off their playful side, or giving you those slow, sweet blinks, take this month as a reminder to shower them with love and attention. Cats love a good play session, so consider gifting them interactive toys like laser pointers, feather wands, or puzzle feeders to keep their minds sharp and their bodies active. Even something as simple as a cardboard box can spark endless fun!
Happy Cat Month is the purr-fect excuse to spoil your feline friend and make sure they're living their happiest, most content life. Let’s celebrate our cats and all the joy they bring!
