This past weekend marked International Homeless Animals Day (August 16), a day dedicated to raising awareness about the millions of dogs, cats, and other pets still waiting for a safe and loving home. The observance, started in 1992 by the International Society for Animal Rights, reminds us that pet homelessness and overpopulation remain challenges worldwide, but also that communities can make a difference.

Why It Matters

Every pet deserves a chance at a forever home, yet shelters and rescues everywhere are full of animals waiting for someone to love them. Spay/neuter programs, fostering, and adoption all play a huge role in reducing the number of homeless pets.

Our Local Connection

Here at Oak Grove Kennel, we’ve been proud to support the Senior Dog Rescue of Oregon. Senior dogs often face extra hurdles in finding homes, but they have so much love left to give. By partnering with SDR, we’ve been able to help a few of these wonderful dogs on their journey to a forever family.

How You Can Help

Want to get involved? Here are some ways to make a difference for homeless pets in our community:

  • Adopt, don’t shop: If you’re looking for a new family member, check out local shelters and rescues first.

  • Foster: Even short-term fostering can help ease shelter overcrowding and give pets a safe place to land.

  • Donate: Supplies, food, or financial contributions all go a long way.

  • Volunteer: Walking dogs, cuddling cats, or helping at events makes a big impact.

  • Spread the word: Share adoptable pets on your social media to boost their visibility.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

International Homeless Animals Day may be just one date on the calendar, but the need continues year-round. Whether you choose to adopt, volunteer, or simply share the message, every small action helps a pet take one step closer to a forever home.
