April 26th is National Kids and Pets Day—a heartwarming holiday that highlights the special bond between children and their furry (or feathery or scaly!) companions. Whether it’s a dog, cat, rabbit, or reptile, pets can play a huge role in a child’s development—and vice versa!

National Kids and Pets Day was founded in 2005 by celebrity family and pet lifestyle expert Colleen Paige. The day was created to not only celebrate the bond between children and animals, but also to raise awareness about the importance of choosing safe and appropriate pets for kids, and promoting the adoption of animals in need.

Here’s why this day is worth celebrating, and how your family can join in.

The Benefits of Pets for Kids

Growing up with a pet isn’t just fun—it’s incredibly rewarding. Here are a few of the many ways pets can help kids thrive:

  • Teaches responsibility – Feeding, brushing, or even walking a pet helps kids learn to care for others and stick to a routine.

  • Builds empathy – Children learn to understand and respect the needs of their animal friends, which builds compassion.

  • Boosts physical and mental health – Pets encourage more outdoor time, play, and comfort during tough moments.

  • Provides companionship – Pets can be loyal friends through all stages of childhood, offering unconditional love and support.

Helping Kids Be Great Pet Owners

With a little guidance, kids can become fantastic caregivers and companions. Here are a few tips to help them grow into the role:

  • Start with age-appropriate tasks – Younger children can help with feeding, brushing, or filling the water bowl. Older kids might handle walks or help with training.

  • Model gentle behavior – Teach children how to pet calmly, avoid tail pulling, and give animals space when they need it.

  • Make learning fun – Read books or watch videos about how to care for pets together!

Safety First

While kids and pets can be a wonderful combo, supervision and safety are key:

  • Always supervise young children with pets, especially new or nervous animals.

  • Teach kids to respect pet signals – growling, tail tucking, or hiding means it’s time to give them space.

  • Set boundaries for both the kids and the pets to avoid accidental injuries or stress.

Fun Ways to Celebrate Kids and Pets Day

Want to make the day extra special? Here are a few ideas:

  • Draw a picture together of your family pet (or the pet you wish you had!)

  • Bake some pet-safe treats at home or pick up your pet's favorite snack from the store

  • Snuggle up for a photo shoot and capture your child’s love for their pet

  • Spend extra time playing outside together with your pet

Cherish the Bond

The friendship between kids and pets is a beautiful, joyful thing—and it deserves to be celebrated! Whether they’re learning, playing, or just snuggling on the couch, these relationships help shape who we become.
