Every year on July 31st, we celebrate National Mutt Day, a day dedicated to all the lovable, loyal, and completely unique mixed-breed dogs out there. Whether you call them mutts, blends, or all-American dogs, these pups bring just as much love (and often a little more personality) to our lives as their purebred cousins.

Why Celebrate Mutts?

Mixed-breed dogs are known for their distinct looks and charming quirks. No two mutts are exactly alike, which makes them all the more special. Beyond that, they often come with genetic diversity that may lead to fewer breed-specific health concerns. Many mutts are adopted from shelters and rescues, so celebrating them also highlights the importance of pet adoption.

Did You Know?

  • Mutts have been movie stars too! The beloved dog in "Old Yeller" was a Labrador/Mastiff mix. And "Benji," one of the most famous dogs in film, was a mutt adopted from a shelter.

  • Shelter statistics show that mutts make up the majority of dogs in U.S. animal shelters. That means when you adopt, there’s a good chance you’re getting a one-of-a-kind mixed-breed friend.

  • Studies suggest mixed-breed dogs may live longer on average than purebred dogs, thanks to their diverse genetics.

Celebrate the One You Love

You don’t need a party or a fancy event to honor your mutt — just a little time together goes a long way. Share their story, snap some photos, give them an extra treat, or simply tell them how awesome they are.

National Mutt Day is a great opportunity to appreciate what makes your dog unique and to remind others of the wonderful pets waiting for homes in shelters.

A Little Bit of History

National Mutt Day was founded in 2005 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige, who wanted to bring attention to the many mixed-breed dogs in shelters waiting for loving homes. It's actually celebrated twice a year — on July 31st and December 2nd — as a way to keep awareness going all year long.

So whether your mutt is big or small, scruffy or sleek, take a moment this week to celebrate what makes them truly special. Mixed-breed dogs might be a blend of everything, but they give us everything in return.
