Spring is here, and with it comes that irresistible urge to declutter, dust, and freshen things up. As you break out the broom and start organizing closets, don’t forget your four-legged family members! A clean space is great, but a pet-safe clean space? That’s even better.

A dog lays on a sunlit floor among torn tissues as a vacuum cleaner approaches. Shadows create a striped pattern on the beige surface.

Here are a few tips to help you tackle spring cleaning with pets in mind:

1. Choose Pet-Safe Cleaning Products

Many traditional cleaners contain chemicals that can be harmful to pets—especially those that linger on floors or surfaces your pet might lick or walk across. When possible, opt for pet-safe or natural alternatives (like vinegar and baking soda) and always store products securely out of paw’s reach. Need to use something stronger? Make sure pets are out of the room until surfaces are dry and aired out.

2. Mind the Air Quality

Freshening up your home with air sprays, diffusers, or essential oils? Be cautious—some essential oils like tea tree, citrus, eucalyptus, and pine can be toxic to dogs and cats. Stick to pet-safe scents and always provide good ventilation. Opening the windows while cleaning can help clear the air and bring in some spring sunshine, too!

3. Wash Pet Bedding and Toys

Just like your own linens, your pet’s blankets, beds, and plush toys need regular cleaning—especially during allergy season. Use fragrance-free detergent and a hot water cycle to remove dirt, dander, and allergens. Hard toys? Give them a soak in a pet-safe cleaner or toss them in the dishwasher (if they’re dishwasher-safe).

4. Organize the Pet Corner

Now’s a great time to go through your pet’s belongings. Toss worn-out leashes, expired treats, and broken toys. Wipe down food and water bowls, clean out the toy bin, and refresh your pet’s grooming supplies. An organized space helps you stay on top of their needs—and makes daily life smoother!
